While 45 thousand unemployed have attended İŞKUR’s employment fair within three days in the hope of “finding a job,” this “interest” becomes something remarkable as it unfolds the dimensions of unemployment. While it has been stated that only 10% of those who applied for job openings are hired, the firms claimed “we can’t see ahead.”

Within three days 45 thousand citizens have attended the Ankara 6th Employment Fair and Career Days organized by the Turkish Employment Agency (İŞKUR) affiliated with the Ministry of Family, Labor and Social Services in the hope of “finding a job.” İŞKUR Ankara Director Arif Ay, who stated that the “interest” in the fair by citizens who have been grappling with unemployment was pleasing. Talking to halagazeteciyiz.net Ay said that “A significant number of CVs were collected. Some people were hired as well. The feedbacks were good. We were pleased.” Ay stated that the number of people who were hired was 3,500, adding “Even white-collar workers were employed at this fair organized for the sixth time. It was also good for the students who would begin working soon. We will organize the fair next year too.”

EVEN LESS THAN 10% COULD FIND A JOB

160 firms participated in the Ankara 6th Employment Fair and Career Days organized by İŞKUR. People of all ages expected to “get hired” leaving their CVs with these firms. Among the applicants, however, even less than 10% were able to find a job.

‘WE’RE LOOKING FOR A JOB BUT CAN’T FIND ONE’

Arif Ay

Yasin İsmail Gülmez said that he was looking for a job for some time now but could not find one due to economic stagnation, adding that the production sector was not offering new positions. Gülmez underlined the fact that he was not even able to find new job postings saying “I’ve come here in the hope of finding a job. Our country is in an economic crisis and this is what we hear at every job interview we go to. They tell us about the embargos imposed by the United States on steel, aluminum, and raw materials. The firms are suffering because of this and this, in the end, makes us suffer too.”

‘MY FRIENDS ARE IN THE SAME POSITION AS WELL’

Gülmez also stated that a great majority of his friends were also in the same position as he was, adding “There are a lot of unemployed people in every field around me. Though rare, those friends of mine who got hired were laid off because of the crisis. We constantly applied for jobs online. We are looking for jobs but we have nowhere to apply to because there are no new postings. We suffer because of this.”

THE GROUNDS OF ‘WE CANNOT SEE AHEAD’

Mechanical engineer Burak Ünal is also among the citizens who joined the army of the unemployed this year. Ünal, who indicated that he had no employment concerns when he was an undergraduate, said “I did not have an employment concern this much because when I started school the level of production in our country was not bad. But now wherever I go I am told ‘We cannot see ahead.’” Ünal stated that employers were laying off workers rather than hiring them, adding “I came to this fair thinking ‘what if.’ Some important firms were supposed to be here. I wanted to apply for jobs. Whatever will be will be. Otherwise we always will try to open this door. I am constantly applying for jobs online anyway.”
